KATHY HEGBERG, MA
Kathy is a child and family therapist and founder of the nonprofit FocusedKids based in the Roaring Fork Valley, CO.
She has a Master's degree in Counselor Education and Counseling Practice from CU and taught in that program as an adjunct professor for 13 years. She has a private practice serving children and families for 27 years. She believes in empowering kids and adults to manage themselves healthfully and effectively, supporting overall well-being.
Working with hundreds of families and children in her practice and local schools, she began incorporating evolving research (2008) on the developing brain by teaching kids about their brains and offering them varying strategies for self-regulation, focus, calming, and effective problem-solving. In 2011, she founded a nonprofit called FocusedKids (www.focusedkidsw.org). The program partners with schools, families, and community organizations to prioritize healthy brains for our children beginning in utero.
We are instilling mindful self-regulation skills and brain-building techniques into daily routines to increase resilience, self-awareness, and focused attention. To build awareness, she started an annual conference called Healthy Brains, Healthy Lives and brought neuroscience, mindfulness, education, and psychotherapy experts to present to the community. She has self-published three workbooks on Amazon, has written eleven lesson books to support the FocusedKids method, and has frequently written and presented on FocusedKids.
